Functional Dry Needling

Find relief from acute and chronic injuries with FDN at Total Function PT!

Functional Dry Needling (FDN) is a tool used by physical therapists for the treatment of pain and musculoskeletal dysfunction.

FDN treatment involves the use of very thin needles that are tapped into the skin and directed toward specific structures in the deeper soft tissue layers by the physical therapist.

One common target of FDN practitioners is referred to as a “trigger point” or a “knot” in muscle tissue. Introduction of a needle into a muscle trigger point has been shown to cause physiological changes in muscle tissue at a cellular level. With the use of a needle, the physical therapist triggers a cascade of events in the body that decreases pain and improves function in patients.

FDN has been used successfully for the treatment of functional deficits caused by muscle dysfunctions such as increased tightness, weakness, and decreased neuromuscular control.

Common problems treated with FDN include neck pain and cervical radiculopathy, headaches, rotator cuff tendonitis, tennis elbow, shoulder pain, low back pain, sciatica, piriformis syndrome, knee pain, hip pain, Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis.

FDN is an effective tool in the treatment of acute and chronic sports injuries and common overuse injuries.
